Mosaic-Architecture 3D printed (3DP) models are your best method of visualizing and communicating architectural ideas. At Protofacturing we recommend 3DP technology over Stereolithography (SLA), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or any of the other rapid prototyping technologies that we use. 3DPs speed, build size capability and costing make it an ideal choice for architectural models. Using our 3DP service, builders and architects create both simple and complex models, proportionally scaled in real space. These models are less ambiguous than CAD simulations, prints or renderings. Architects, Engineers and Contractors (AEC) use 3DP models from conceptual design through construction. Massing models are printed directly from CAD and BIM data. Detailed components for a design study can be printed and assist the designer in creating concept iterations. 3DP models are the fastest, most cost effective way to fabricate complex geometries in both pure white and high definition colour.

Architectural Massing Model Massing Models

A massing model is a very simple, exterior-only type of architectural model, used to study the essence of the overall 3D form and proportions of an architectural design. It is a dimensionally accurate summary of the fundamental exterior forms of a building. A good massing model communicates the essential forms of a building, and therefore a large part of the architectural character of the building. It will show how the design interacts with neighbouring buildings and other elements in its three dimensional space. The massing model should show the same silhouette against the sky as the complete building. These models are usually made in white and show how the structure in question interacts with its surrounding space. 3DP technology is ideally suited to produce these forms quickly and economically.

Exterior Colour Presentation Models Exterior Colour Presentation Models

Using our 3DP process, the forms and shapes of a Protofacturing Exterior Model are built in the same way that massing models are but with the addition of colour and textures that are printed to the surface areas. The application of colour brings the model to life and allows fine details to be shown. 3DP colour presentation models are excellent to help communicate the aesthetics of a project to the client. Before the advent of 3DP scale presentation models were hand built by skilled craftsmen costing many thousands of dollars and taking weeks to complete. Today, using our process we can have the model in your hands for presentation to the client within days at a significantly reduced cost. And should the design team and client choose to make changes, we can turn around again within just a few days and supply the new iteration of the design.

Hands-On Interactive Models Hands-On Interactive Models

Typically, 3D computer renderings or traditional paper plans are difficult for clients to understand. A 3DP Hands-On Interactive Model is a relatively complete interior/exterior architectural model with a cut-away used to view an architectural design relatively realistically. The model is constructed in removable sections, such as a removable roof, to enable the display of the interior floor plans. A Hands-On Interactive model often includes material textures, and even details like furniture, appliances and fixtures. These models allow the designers and clients to interact with the model viewing both the exterior aesthetic and the interior living space. A cut-away model is an asset for interior designers in their effort to express their design vision to clients. The interior space is produced allowing the client to see the colours and positioning of furniture in the living space prior to placing an order.

Site Plan models are used to accurately show on a scale basis and with proper dimensioning, the boundaries of a development site. It can be a model of a residential, commercial or resort project involving many building units and various structures. These models are generally used to help convey the layout of a large project. Urban planners will use site plans when working with municipalities and private developers to demonstrate the most effective way to maximize a community’s land use and infrastructure. A Protofacturing 3DP model can be one element of the site plan or it can encompass the entire development site. We can work with the architectural team or urbanists to bring the project to life in a scale model.

Topographic Models Topographic Models

Topography models define shapes, patterns and physical configuration of the surface of the land, including its relief (local differences in elevation) and the positions of natural and man-made features.

Topographic models are used by the resort / real estate sector and the natural resource sector to portray their development projects. Architects use topographic models as bases for architectural and context models. Topographic models can also feature in visitor orientation centres for parks and recreation reserves.

Geospatial Analysis / Geographic Information System Models
